What is Account-based marketing?

Account-based marketing is a go-to-market approach in which sales and marketing coordinate their efforts around a selected set of target companies and the people involved in buying at those companies.

Also known as: ABM

Key takeaways

  • ABM coordinates work around selected accounts and their buying groups.
  • Account selection should reflect commercial fit and the team’s capacity to serve it.
  • Measure account progress, including multiple stakeholders, rather than treating each contact as an independent win.

Overview

The account is the organizing unit for research, engagement and measurement. Teams agree on which companies matter, map relevant stakeholders and tailor activity to the account context. ABM can serve a small strategic list or a larger segment, but it requires more than putting company names into an advertisement. Selection criteria and shared ownership come first.

How it works

  1. Select accounts using explicit fit, value and eligibility criteria.

  2. Map the buying committee and coordinate relevant content and outreach.

  3. Measure account engagement, accepted opportunities and progression through the buying process.

Select accounts the team can act on

An account list is a resource allocation decision. Start with the ideal customer profile, territory and existing relationships, then identify which accounts justify concentrated research and coordinated engagement. A list of impressive company logos is not an ABM strategy if the team cannot explain the relevant problem, the route to a buying conversation or the reason those accounts were prioritized.

Keep account ownership and exclusions visible. Existing customers may belong in an expansion program, while active opportunities need coordination with the salesperson already involved. The same company can contain several business units with different needs, so document whether the target is a parent organization, a subsidiary or a specific unit. That decision affects both research and measurement.

Match program intensity to account value

Not every target needs an individually produced campaign. Group accounts when they share a real operating problem and buying context; reserve bespoke work for accounts where the potential value and available evidence justify it. The tiers below are an illustrative planning device, not universal ABM thresholds.

Whatever the tier, sales and marketing need a shared account brief. Include the problem hypothesis, known stakeholders, relevant evidence and the next coordinated action. If one team optimizes clicks while the other is trying to resolve a procurement concern, activity can rise without moving the account forward.

Small account clusterSimilar problem, segment and buying processCommon narrative with account-specific evidence
Broader target segmentConsistent fit criteria and useful contentShared qualification and routing rules

Measure movement inside the account

Track whether the team has reached relevant roles, learned something about the decision process and created an accepted next step. Five contacts from one account downloading the same guide is different from five unrelated target accounts entering a qualified conversation. Preserve the account relationship when reporting engagement so the dashboard does not inflate coverage.

For an illustrative cohort of 40 target accounts, record which were researched, which had relevant stakeholders engaged and which became qualified opportunities under a consistent definition. Compare like-for-like cohorts and observation windows. Attribution is difficult when several channels and sales activity operate together; report contribution and uncertainty rather than crediting every account outcome to the last campaign touch.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

What this looks like in practice

A software team selects 40 logistics companies entering new regions. Marketing creates a relevant operations guide while sales researches each account’s expansion and stakeholders. Both teams use the same account list.

Examples explain the concept; they are not reported customer results.

What to check

Check target-list quality, stakeholder coverage and opportunity progression. Compare account cohorts with similar characteristics rather than attributing every touched deal to ABM.

Common mistake

Calling a broad contact campaign ABM when sales and marketing have not agreed on the target accounts or the reason those accounts fit.

Account-based marketing vs. Lead generation

Lead generation creates identifiable prospects. ABM organizes activity around selected companies and their stakeholders. Lead generation can contribute to an ABM program without defining the whole approach.

Questions answered

What is Account-based marketing?

Account-based marketing is a go-to-market approach in which sales and marketing coordinate their efforts around a selected set of target companies and the people involved in buying at those companies.

Does ABM require a tiny account list?

No. The level of personalization can vary by account tier. The essential requirement is intentional account selection and coordinated treatment.

What data does ABM need?

Start with reliable company identifiers, fit criteria, account ownership and stakeholder roles. Add relevant signals and engagement only when they support a clear action.

Can a small team use ABM?

Yes, if the account list is small enough for coordinated work and there is a clear reason to focus. A concise shared account brief can be more useful than a complex campaign stack. Start with a manageable segment and the handoff between marketing and sales.

Is ABM only paid advertising?

No. Account research, relevant content, events, sales conversations and customer expansion can all contribute. Advertising is one possible channel. The defining feature is coordinated work around selected accounts, not a particular medium or the presence of an account-targeting feature in an ad platform.
