Key takeaways
- Sales intelligence makes account and contact information useful for a commercial decision.
- A large database is only one input; interpretation, freshness and delivery matter.
- Evidence should explain why an account is relevant without pretending to know its private buying intentions.
Overview
It combines company facts, contact context, activity and market events into something usable for a decision. A raw funding announcement is data; an evidence-backed explanation of how that event relates to an account’s priorities is intelligence. Preserve the underlying source so users can inspect the reasoning and distinguish facts from interpretations.
How it works
Collect relevant account, contact and event data from permitted sources.
Resolve identities and connect the evidence to a commercial question.
Present the finding, its date and an actionable but qualified interpretation.
Move from attributes to a decision
A company record containing industry, size and location describes an organization. Sales intelligence connects those attributes with a question such as which accounts should receive research this week. That requires a target profile, a reason to prioritize and a useful next action. Adding more fields without changing a decision produces a richer database, not necessarily better intelligence.
Keep the evidence behind the interpretation. A public expansion announcement may support a territory hypothesis, while a technology signal may suggest integration relevance. Neither proves a purchase project exists. Useful intelligence makes that distinction visible so the salesperson can open an informed conversation instead of repeating an unsupported claim.
| Layer | Example | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Description | Company size, industry and geography | Is the account potentially eligible? |
| Context | Dated expansion or operating change | Why might the account matter now? |
| Interpretation | Problem hypothesis with supporting evidence | What should the team investigate? |
| Action | Relevant owner and proposed next step | Who should do what with the information? |
Evaluate evidence at the field level
Different sources are useful for different claims. A company’s own product page can establish how it describes its offering; it may not establish employee count. A contact profile may show a role but be out of date. Store the source, observation date and match confidence with important fields rather than applying one quality label to an entire provider or account.
Check entity resolution before combining sources. A shared company name or a parent-subsidiary relationship can cause one organization’s signal to be attached to another. When evidence conflicts, preserve the conflict and decide which source is authoritative for that field. Silent overwrite rules make errors difficult to trace.
Measure whether the team uses the intelligence
Deliver the brief where the account owner works, with stable identifiers and a concise explanation of relevance. If research sits in a separate export that nobody reviews, its theoretical quality does not create an operational benefit. Confirm that the receiving tool preserves sources and important caveats rather than flattening everything into an unqualified notes field.
In an illustrative review of 30 briefs, count those accepted by account owners, those corrected and those ignored with a reason. Track whether the brief changed account priority or improved a next-step decision. Revenue remains a later outcome affected by many factors; a useful early measure is whether accurate evidence consistently reaches the right owner in time to act.
What this looks like in practice
A research brief connects a company’s new distribution center with open operations roles and an existing technology stack. It suggests a logistics use case while clearly labeling that use case as an inference.
Examples explain the concept; they are not reported customer results. What to check
Assess factual accuracy, freshness, coverage and usefulness in real decisions. Ask whether a salesperson can verify the finding without repeating the entire research process.
Common mistake
Presenting an AI-generated explanation as a verified company fact when the source supports only part of the conclusion.
Sales intelligence vs. B2B data
B2B data consists of business-related records and observations. Sales intelligence selects and interprets that data for sales decisions, ideally retaining the evidence behind the interpretation.

What is Sales intelligence?
Sales intelligence is information and analysis that helps sales teams understand accounts, identify relevant people and decide where, when and how to focus commercial effort.
Is sales intelligence only contact data?
No. Company structure, technology, market changes and buying context can matter as much as names and addresses.
How current should intelligence be?
Freshness depends on the decision. A legal company identifier may change slowly, while a job opening or buying initiative can become outdated quickly.
Is sales intelligence the same as intent data?
No. Intent data is one possible source of timing or interest signals. Sales intelligence also includes company fit, contact roles, existing relationships, operating context and interpretation. A useful brief can exist without third-party intent data, and an intent score alone is not a complete account assessment.
How should sales intelligence tools be compared?
Use the same account sample and required outputs. Evaluate correct matches, field freshness, evidence, workflow fit and cost per accepted brief. Include difficult records and test delivery to the actual destination. A catalog size or claimed coverage percentage cannot replace a representative evaluation of your market.
