What is technographic data?

Technographic data is the record of which technologies a company uses - detected, dated and tracked over time. What it observes, how it is collected, why the changes matter more than the snapshot, and how it is used in prospecting and enrichment.

Technographic data is the record of which technologies a company uses: the software, platforms, infrastructure and tools detectable on its websites, in its job postings, through its public integrations and in the observations a provider accumulates over time. Where firmographics describe what a company is, technographics describe what it runs, and because purchases are made in relation to what a company already runs, it is one of the most predictive families in go-to-market data.

The definition

A technographic record for a company lists technologies by category - CRM, marketing automation, commerce platform, analytics, cloud, payments, support, data warehouse - with, for each entry, how it was detected and when. The better records also carry history: when a technology first appeared, when it last was confirmed, and when it stopped being detected. That history is what turns a directory listing into a signal, and it is why the field belongs in the company data catalog rather than in a one-off lookup.

How technographic data is collected

COLLECTION METHODS AND WHAT EACH ONE CAN SEE
MethodSeesBlind spot
Site detectionScripts, tags, DNS records and headers on the public web propertiesInternal tools that never touch the marketing site
Job postingsTechnologies named in requirements, with a dateAspirational mentions; tools listed to attract candidates
Integration directoriesPublicly listed partner and app connectionsListings that outlive the actual usage
Dated observations over timeAdoptions, changes and removalsOnly as good as the observation cadence

Every method carries a confidence. A script on the marketing site proves the marketing team uses a tool and says nothing about the product team, so a good record states its method and its date, and an agent weighing the field treats a fresh site detection differently from a two-year-old posting mention.

Events over snapshots

Knowing that a company runs a particular CRM describes a decision made years ago. Knowing that the CRM changed last quarter describes a decision being made now. Three events carry most of the value: an adoption, which says a decision was just made and adjacent purchases follow; a change, which says a migration is in progress and the owner is evaluating; and a removal, which says the replacement conversation is live this month. Absence is weak evidence, because a tool not detected may simply be a tool not detectable from outside, so a removal only counts when a prior, dated detection existed.

How it is used

In prospecting, technographics find companies by complement (they run the platform yours integrates with) and by displacement (they run the rival yours replaces), and the events time the outreach. Combined with hiring signals they produce the ranked matrix in technographic and hiring-signal prospecting. In enrichment, the field fills a list or a CRM segment through a waterfall so scoring and segmentation can use it. In signal monitoring, a standing watch on an account set reports the events as they happen, which is the form AstroFabric's signals agent delivers it in.

Frequently asked questions

What is technographic data?

The record of which technologies a company uses - software, platforms, infrastructure and tools - detected from its web properties, job postings, public integrations and dated observations, ideally with history showing adoptions, changes and removals.

How is technographic data different from firmographic data?

Firmographics describe what a company is: size, industry, revenue band, location. Technographics describe what it runs. Firmographics decay slowly; technographics change in weeks to months, which is why the dated events matter more than the snapshot.

How accurate is technographic data?

It depends on the method. Site detection is reliable for tools that touch public web properties; posting mentions and integration listings need corroboration. A good record states its method, its date and its confidence so the value can be weighed rather than trusted blindly.

How do sales teams use technographics?

To find companies that run a complementary or a rival technology, to time outreach to adoptions, changes and removals, to enrich lists and CRM segments for scoring, and to watch named accounts for stack changes as a standing signal.

What is firmographic data?

Firmographic data describes what a company is - size, industry, revenue, location, ownership, age. The fields, where they come from, why observed values beat estimates, and how firmographics anchor ICP filters, fit scores and every waterfall that follows.
